Off the top of my head I didn’t know a specific answer, but I was aware that Canon makes it tricky and it would most likely involve using some third-party software.

To be honest, that would probably be enough to convince me to upgrade from my 70D. If they choose the former, they can make meaningful improvements to the Mk2 by combining the best available parts from their more recently released models in a robust, weather-sealed body. The question is whether they will choose to continue with a lower spec and price point than the D500, or whether they will attempt to compete on a more equal footing. The upswing in mirrorless cameras is one challenge for this market space in general, but Nikon's positioning of the D500 is a more specific situation that Canon to which Canon will need to respond. The 7D line can be easily explained as the DSLR APS/C choice for sports and wildlife, incorporating many of the features and robustness of the 1D line, but at a more reasonable price point.
